Barton-on-Sea Golf Club, founded in 1897, is situated on the coastal cliff between Highcliffe and Milford-on-Sea. The current 27 holes are a combination of the original Harry Colt design from 1932 and the newer holes designed by the well-known J. Hamilton Stutt, a founder member of the Association of British Golf Course Architects, which were completed in 1992. The course has three loops of nine holes which start and finish close to the clubhouse. Many forms of golfing challenge await the player from the shot over the water to the island green on Needles 9, to links style bump and run shots to the greens close to the coastline. Sea breezes also add to an enjoyable test of golf. Couple this with breathtaking sea views, and a pleasurable experience is guaranteed. Set in the heart of North Cornwall in 230 acres of rolling hills and woodland is the Bowood Park Golf Club. The par 72 course runs to 6,692 yards for the men, 5,700 for the ladies and is set up in a way which should maximise enjoyment for all standards of golfer. The well-drained greens, built to USGA standards, means the course rarely closes in inclement weather, and in winter tees and greens are in full use. With two nine-hole loops back to the clubhouse, starts are possible from the first or the tenth - useful for those wanting an early nine-hole game. The first nine starts at the upper end of the course and makes for an excellent warm-up to a full round, The second nine quickly descends past the old Lanteglos church into the valley of the river Allen, which is lined by attractive bluebell woods and streams. The signature hole is the 385 yard 12th, the Azalea hole, a challenging par four with an island green reached by a covered wooden footbridge reminiscent of New England. Bramshaw Golf Club, the oldest in Hampshire, is situated at Brook in the heart of the beautiful New Forest National Park. The Club has two excellent and contrasting 18-hole courses. The mature parkland Manor Course is 6,537 yards (Par 71), and the heathland Forest Course is 5,774 yards long (Par 69). The Forest Course, like a links course but inland, offers the unusual feature of playing amongst roaming deer and forest ponies (and even pigs in the autumn!). The ever-changing scenery of humps, hollows and meandering streams test golfing skills and judgement within an idyllic New Forest setting. Its open aspects and rolling heathland are in complete contrast to the Manor Course. The Manor Course was opened in 1970. Set amidst the beautiful New Forest in landscaped parkland of mature trees and 200 year old hardwood plantations, it is undoubtedly amongst the finest and most picturesque courses in the South of England. There are two fantastic golf courses at the Burnham & Berrow Golf Club, 'The Championship Course' and 'The Channel Course'. The Championship course is laid out in the traditional manner of nine holes out and nine back. The first nine skirt the sand dunes and coastline northwards, turning inland and southwards and then following the coast road through Berrow, past the Church and back into Burnham.The greens are renowned as true and quick and the course is guaranteed to be in good condition all year round due to the sandy subsoil. As with all links golf the challenging factor is the wind and its unpredictability ensuring a different and memorable experience everytime you play.The layout of The Channel Course is excellent with several extremely good holes which vie with some on the Championship Course. The course is approximately 3000 yards long and now has a redesigned 2nd hole and a new 8th hole (by Martin Hawtree). Weston-super-Mare Golf Club is an attractive links course situated at the southern end of Weston Bay, with superb views across the Bristol Channel towards Cardiff. The course is an easy walk, with generous fairways and the wind often playing a decisive role in making a good score. The overall impression when playing the course is of wide horizons and masses of sky. In summer the greens are fast and true; the fairways tight and the rough punishing. In winter the course is rarely closed and is always played off real tees. The signature hole is the 15th - a 458 yard par 4, which is reputably modelled on the 17th at St Andrews Old Course, with a blind tee shot and out of bounds down the right, and the green set at an angle to the treacherous bunker at the front corner. The well manicured 5850 yard par 70 parkland course flows through several, slightly undulating, walled and tree-lined fields. It has an excellent mix of holes providing a challenge to the lower handicapper, without intimidating the less proficient golfer.
